Oral Cancer
Oral cancer can develop in any part of the oral cavity (the mouth and lips) or the oropharynx (the part of the throat at the back of the mouth). Anyone can get oral cancer, but the risk is higher if you are male, over age 40, Most cases of oral cancer are linked to cigarette smoking, heavy alcohol use, or the use of both tobacco and alcohol together.
Using tobacco plus alcohol poses a much greater risk than using either substance alone .Frequent sun exposure is also a risk for lip cancer.
Infection with the sexually transmitted human papillomavirus (specifically the HPV 16 type) has been linked to a subset of oral cancers.
Symptoms of Oral cancer :
A person who has any of the following symptoms for more than 2 weeks should see a dentist or doctor for an oral cancer exam. Most often, symptoms like those listed below do not mean cancer :
- White or red patches in your mouth
- A mouth sore that won't heal
- Bleeding in your mouth
- Loose teeth
- Problems or pain with swallowing
- A lump in your neck
- An earache
An oral cancer examination can detect early signs of cancer. The exam is painless and takes only a few minutes. Dr Nabbout use additional tests to aid in identifying areas of abnormal cells in your mouth. The goal with Oral Cancer Screening is to identify cancer early, when there is a greater chance for a cure.
