Aphtous Ulcers or Canker Sores
Canker sores (aphthous ulcers ) are small, painful ulcers inside the mouth. They may occur anywhere on the inside of the mouth and throat. They usually appear white, gray, or yellow in color, with a red border. Unlike cold sores ( Herpses) , canker sores don't occur on the surface of your lips and aren't contagious.
They can be painful, however, and can make eating and talking difficult.
The exact cause of Canker Sores is unknown. But possible causes and triggers are:
- An injury to your mouth from dental work, brushing too hard, or an accidental
cheek bite
- Toothpastes and mouth rinses containing sodium lauryl sulfate
- Food : spicy or acidic foods. Sensitivities to few kinds of foods , particularly to chocolate, coffee, strawberries, eggs, nuts, cheese and highly acidic foods, such as pineapple
- A diet lacking in vitamin B-12, zinc, folate (folic acid) or iron
- Hormonal shifts during menstruation
- Emotional stress
Canker sores may also occur because of diseases, such as:
- Crohn's disease
- Behcet's disease,
-Suppression of immune system , and diseases like HIV/AIDS.
Treatment is not usually necessary for small lesions, but a number of treatment options exist for large painful ulcers, such as :
*Mouth rinses : reduce pain and inflammation.
*Topical paste : active ingredients such as benzocaine, can help relieve pain and speed healing if applied to individual sores as soon as they appear.
* Nutritional supplements , as folic acid, vitamin B-6 and B-12, and Zinc.
* Cautery of sores : it could be chemical substance or instrument that burn the lesion.
*Laser Treatment : the most direct and immediate way of treating the aphtous ulcer.
This treatment is not painful, quick, not expensive and very effective.
